Unlike any other fern, it is sometimes called holly fern due to the distinctive shape of the fronds. An evergreen fern with broad, leathery fronds that have an upright habit. It looks particularly attractive plant in woodland gardens or even in a shady border, but it does need humus-rich soil to thrive in.
Location: partial to full shade.
Soil Type: moderately fertile, humus-rich, damp but good draining soil.
